Sino-American Relations during the Trade War Period and Up to the Covid-19 Pandemic Period

The Sino-US relationship is one of the most important relations in the international system, governed by pragmatic expediency, a mixture of conflict and cooperation (Jianfei, 2009). The two countries are also nuclear power and two of the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council (UN). Each of these two countries has advantages; both possess economic, political, and military capabilities capable of qualifying them to become a basic and important actor in the regional and global systems (Joshi, 2020). Moreover, the relations between the two countries are affected by changing circumstances. Today, we are witnessing the emergence of a new variable that may affect Sino-American relations: the emergence and spread of the Coronavirus (Lin, 2021).
This study will attempt to answer the following central questions:
1. What is the nature of Sino-American relations? How did these relations turn into a trade war?
2. To what extent does the Coronavirus affect Sino-American relations?
The study assumes that no matter the size of cooperation and trade exchange between China and the United States of America, it remains within the framework of competition. The United States refuses to accept a partner in the international system and wants to remain the first superpower economically, militarily, and politically that exclusively rules the world without any dispute.

The problem of the study
The American hegemony witnessed an actual challenge after the Cold War represented by the rise of great powers such as China, Russia, India, and others (Jianfei, 2009). However, what most frightens the United States of America is China’s peaceful rise, which has become its competition for world leadership rejecting the unipolar system. Hence, the following central question arises: What is Sino-American relations’ nature, and how have these relations turned into a trade war and Coronavirus affects Sino-American relations?
The question is divided into other sub-questions:
a) How has the trade war affected the economy of China and the economy of America?
b) To what extend does Coronavirus has an impact on Sino-US relations?
Hypothesis
The study assumes that despite the size of cooperation and trade exchange between China and the United States of America, it remains within the framework of competition. The United States is unwilling to have a partner in the international system. It seeks to remain the first superpower economically, militarily, and politically that exclusively rules the world without any dispute.
The importance of the study
China’s involvement in the G20, in the 2016 presidency for the G20 Hangzhou Summit, revealed the leadership status in international relations throughout the process, as a promising future of China in global governance (i.e., Kirton & Wang, 2021; Ren, 2017).
However, this study focuses on exploring the Sino-American relations’ nature and how these relations turned into a trade war, and Coronavirus will affect the Sino-American relations. The study’s importance stems from the fact that it deals with two great nuclear powers in the international system. Both have the right to veto. Therefore, it is essential to understand the nature of the relationship between them and their impact on global powers’ balance. It is also critical to know how the emerging global events affect relations between the two countries, as they affect the world.
