The following describes the three levels of preventative care.
• Primary prevention: Developing strategies to prevent risk factors and unhealthy behaviors (Tobacco use, good nutrition)
• Secondary prevention: Identifying those with specific risk factors for disease and providing education to prevent the onset of disease or control these risk factors. (Ex. Management of metabolic syndrome)
• Tertiary prevention: Educating the patient on how to manage an illness or disease once it has already occurred, so it does not deteriorate or become worse. (Ex. COPD, CHF, Diabetes education)
