Collaboration is an essential part of a well-functioning organization, allowing groups of individuals to accomplish tasks that individually would be impossible or inefficient. Information systems that allow for members of an organization to share data amongst the members of a team enable businesses, non-profits, and governments to collaborate more effectively, removing barriers that previously existed. Collaborative information systems allow groups to collaborate without being in the same place at the same time (Mehedintu, Privu & Vasilescu, 2008). Enterprise databases allow multiple members of a group to access the same information regardless of location (Bourgeois, 2014). Workers at distant locations can contribute to team efforts alongside co-workers operating in different time zones. The types of data that can be shared are myriad: images, documents voice, text, and video can all be shared (Mehedintu, Privu & Vasilescu, 2008). Instead of relying on physical presence in the same location at the same time, or utilization of more stringent communication such as telephone or the mail system, organizations are now able to share information at a low cost and with more flexibility (Mehedintu, Privu & Vasilescu, 2008).
As an example, the United States Navy uses multiple information systems that allow groups to collaborate. Video teleconferencing (VTC) is used to connect individuals at different locations, allowing higher-tier commanders to have meetings with their subordinate commanders across the world. VTC provides more data than a simple telephone call; by allowing for video transmission, individuals have the benefit of seeing the facial expressions and body language of a speaker. Also, the Navy uses SharePoint to enhance collaboration; users from any location can access and publish files to be viewed or edited by other members in a group. Microsoft Outlook allows teams to create shared schedules, allowing units to coordinate and communicate mission requirements across multiple warfare areas without confliction. In the organization that operates globally, the ability to share information across space and time is paramount to mission accomplishment. These are only a few examples of how an organization can leverage information systems to enhance collaboration by providing data to different members of a team unrestricted by separation of distance or time.

Apple has remained one of the top leaders of innovation in how we communicate with one another. Moreover, the company has an advantage in the market by completing processes virtually. Apple intranet allows employees to receive information from their desktop as well as an extranet which connect them to suppliers and developers.
With the virtual feature, retailers can route information to customer service, offer services or receive feedback from customers. Apple communication system enable the ability for all employees at various levels to work together and achieve the company goals. Open channels of communication can lead to innovative ideas or methods of improvement.

I think the VTC is one of the most significant changes in the military. I feel that the military’s technology will develop slower than the usual world. It might because of the security protection. This is the tough part of the military’s development. We need the new technology to keep the operation run, but the risk is unacceptable. It took us three years to upgrade to Windows 10 system with no main security issues. The headquarter( senior manager) must make this decision with a lot of database research.
