Nature of Organizational Systems

Nature of Organizational Systems. From now on, whenever you hear or use the term organization, think organizational system, because every organization is a system. The very definition of system—an integrated set of processes that have been systematically structured to carry out objectives defined by a mission and vision—also defines an organization. Fundamental to the idea of the doctor of education as a systems thinker is that from now on you will recognize your organization, school, college, agency, or corporation as a system.

Processes

  • Consider the important stakeholders in your organization:
  • School system (board, administration, teachers, parents, pupils.
  • University (faculty, staff, administration, students, ac-creditors.
  • Corporation (board, executives, middle managers, workers, customers.

Stakeholders

Therefore, select one stakeholder group that you interact with on a regular basis. Choose one organizational process that is a responsibility of that stakeholder group. For example if you chose school teachers as a stakeholder group, you might choose grading as a process.

Leadership

As mentioned in the introduction, this unit focuses on the leader-manager’s role as a systems thinker. In this role, the leader-manager adopts a broad and complex perspective to make decisions and policy choices that take into account the many facets and dimensions that make up an educational organization.

Moreover, the vast collection of literature regarding systems thinking is drawn primarily from the natural sciences, and typically describes an organization as an integrated set of processes that have been systematically structured to carry out objectives defined by a mission and vision. As you will discover in your work in the EdD program, the systems view is fundamental in guiding your development though your doctorate and beyond.
