History of US military

Describe the most important differences between U.S. military operations in Europe and in the Pacific. Note that these differences include both how the U.S. Army mounted operations and the essential aim or function of those operations within the broader operational strategy of the U.S. military as a whole. What did the US Army do in those respective theatres? How did they differ? And why?

2. The nature of U.S. military operations in Vietnam has long been a source of controversy. It might be argued, however, that the controversy itself reflects the fact that the war in Vietnam admitted no perfect solutions.

In the first instance, explain how the U.S. conducted military operations and why it chose to do so the way it did – in other words, what was it trying to achieve in terms of operational and strategic objectives. 3.
At the beginning of the Korean War, the U.S. Army was woefully unprepared to conduct major combat operations. Explain why or how the U.S. Army’s combat effectiveness declined so dramatically between the end of WWII and the beginning of the war in Korea.

4. In one of the video-lectures I argued that since the end of the draft, the U.S. Army has in some respects returned to a situation similar to that of the post-Civil-War era in relation to U.S. society more generally. In what respects is the situation of the Army similar? In what respects is it different?

5. When the draft came to an end, the U.S. Army had to adjust both how it recruited and how it used the people it recruited. Describe some of the measures that the Army adopted in trying to meet that challenge?

6.
In the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, the US Army once again found itself fighting a war it had not anticipated and was, arguably, unprepared for. What were the central operational challenges the Army faced in those wars and in what sense might we say that the Army was unprepared to meet those challenges?

7.
At the end of the term, I outlined some of the strategic challenges/tasks facing the U.S. Army today. What are those challenges and what can you say about their implications for the organization, doctrine, and deployment of U.S. military forces?
