History of Modern Ireland-Movie Review

Few national groups have suffered more from stereotyping than the Irish, particularly in movies. From Barry Fitzgerald as the smiling Irish priest to John Wayne brawling with Victor McLaughlin to the drunken Irishman in a thousand movies, the film has shaped the perception of Irish group identity. In the 19th century, the transmission of historical knowledge and cultural identity came primarily through books and other written materials. For better or worse, in the 20th & 21st centuries (thus far!) this role devolved upon motion pictures. The major writing assignment for this course is to combine both approaches in a quest for historical understanding.
