Film Review: A sensational best-seller brought to screens, Divergent by Veronica Roth
She turns to the future in a world that’s falling apart. For sixteen-year-old Tris, the world changes in a heartbeat when she is forced to make a terrible choice. Turning her back on her family, Tris ventures out, alone, determined to find out where she truly belongs. Shocked by the brutality of her new life, Tris can trust no one. A high-profile YA (Young Adult) sci-fi/fantasy/dystopian series Divergent, based on Veronica Roth’s best-selling novel, fit the big screen, a movie for the newest powerhouse demographic: girls and young women among the ages of 12 and 25.
The actress casted for Tris, Shailene Woodley, did an outstanding job (In my perspective) depicting her character, as well as the rest of the cast, including Theo James (playing Four, Tris’s love interest), Zoe Kravitz (Tris’s best friend Christina), Ansel Elgort (Tris’s brother, Caleb) and Kate Winslet (Erudite leader Jeanine Matthews).Divergent employs many fundamentals: a futuristic post-war setting, a strong heroine, romance, and a struggle against the domination inherent.
Without regards, there were certain inaccuracies that exist between the novel and film. When the film strays from its formerly published perceptions they were not “near misses” but rather a total misrepresentation of the story. However, some of the changes included were really fascinating and added a whole new dimension to the plot making viewing the film a whole new experience. In addition due to limited words there will only be 3 differences, sorry.
Peter and Tris battle
Peter and Tris battle in hand to hand combat as part of their initiation. The results of the battle decide how the applicants will be ranked for future eliminations. Tris got kicked and she ends up in the infirmary. Now in the book she eventually gets back on her feet and goes on with the next step of the initiation, which is a playful yet competitive game of capture the flag.
While, in the movie, when Tris wakes up in the infirmary, Christina and Will are there telling her that one of the Dauntless leaders (Eric) cut her from Dauntless after the match with Peter. If you fail for initiation you become factionless. So just to prove how determined she is Tris breaks out of the infirmary and sprints to the train that is taking them to the game location. Eric is puzzled when he sees Tris, but realizes that he perhaps underestimated her and lets her back in to the rivalry without question.
Another unruffled twist was that in the book the ammo used in the games consisted of relatively harmless paintballs. But in the movie they were darts that would give a victim the sensation of an actual gunshot wound.
I appreciate this change reason being, it gives you more information about initiations, despite that you see the brave perspective of Tris. As she breaks out of the infirmary and sprints to the train, and standing up for herself telling Eric (the leader of Dauntless) that she’s right for this faction, which proves that she’s dauntless, brave.
The Ending
A “tracking device” is placed into all the dauntless members that allow the Erudite to control their mind and bodies so they can have a prompt army that will do whatever they command. This tracker does not work on people that are Divergent (those who were roving around wondering why everyone looks like zombies is shot on site). Tris plays along until she finds Four who is also not under the simulation.
Eventually got captured, Tris is sentenced to death but Jeanine has other plans for Four. Tris escapes imprisonment with help from her mother and makes her way to the control system at dauntless H.Q. to stop the simulation.
In the book, she finds Four unaccompanied under a hefty simulation and he is regulatory the army that is eliminating the Abnegation faction. Tris uses Four’s fears and his love for her to snap him out of the simulation. Four stops the whole operation, Dauntless member’s spur-out-of-the-moment, and Abnegation is saved.
Now, in the movie, Four isn’t alone when Tris arrives at the control system. The Erudite clan is there with Jeanine and they command Four to exterminate Tris. Fear and love are used to snap Four out of the simulation and after the trance is broken Tris and Four team up to whoop some Erudite ass.
Eventually it is just down to Jeanine and she is jostling to finish the operation that will have the Dauntless members exterminate Abnegation. Tris throws a knife that wounds Jeanine’s hand onto the screen so she can’t move, injects her with serum, and eventually making her shut it down. This was one of the change be pleased about, because it really made the conflict between Tris and
Jeanine much more personal
The Dauntless Uniform and HQInstead of only black costumes, the Dauntless also wear red. This doesn’t bother me, because at least the uniform in the movie, has the same element from the initial uniform, which black.
Despite there were differences, equally Medias were remarkable in their specific way and I thoroughly enjoyed both of them.
