The course text notes that tensions and differences in the 1770s led to the American Revolution that eventually produced independence for the United States from Great Britain. When the War for American Independence broke out, both the British and the Americans maintained what they viewed as very significant reasons for going to war based on the rift that had developed between the two groups. Explain the reasons why each side went to war. In doing so, discuss three (3) distinct reasons or events the Americans used to justify war and three (3) distinct reasons or events the British used to justify war. Be sure to explain why each reason or event helped to justify the war for its side. Be sure your answer does justice to both sides so that you fully demonstrate a clear and complete understanding of why each side would see its reasons as significant and legitimate.

2. Chapter 7 of the course text characterizes the opening years of the newly formed United States as “a period of trial and transition” (p. 198). Identify and explain four (4) distinct and specific political, economic, and/or social tensions that occurred in the early years of the United States in the early years of the nation, from 1783 to 1815, that contribute to the characterization of this period of trial and transition. The trials and transitions that you discuss must be domestic (not related to foreign policy or foreign nations). For each tension, be clear in distinguishing the tension from the others, describing specifically what occurred during the time in question that demonstrated the tension, and explaining clearly how the tension constituted a trial and/or a transition for the newly formed nation.

3. Describe the major characteristics of the foreign policy of the United States upon its formation after 1783, when the Revolutionary War had been won. Indicate and explain four (4) distinct characteristics of early US foreign policy, with explanation for each characteristic regarding what ideas or beliefs produced the specific characteristic of foreign policy and what particular actions taken (or not taken) by the early American government reflected the characteristic of foreign policy. Next, identify and explain two (2) specific warnings or advice given in the document entitled Transcript of President George Washingtons Farewell Address (1796). Finally, explain your assessment of the extent to which American foreign policy during this time followed (or did not follow) Washington’s advice. How were the characteristics you describe similar to (or different from) what Washington had adviced in 1796?

4. In Federalist No. 51, Publius (James Madison, February 6, 1788), Madison outlined the “interior structure” of the American government as established by the Constitution. Explain in detail the structure of the government, using its description from Federalist 51 as well as Chapter 6. Make sure to include the “separate and distinct” branches that “exercise . . . different powers,” the method of appointments, checks and balances, and federalism. Then explain what Madison meant when he wrote, “If men were angles, no government would be necessary.” Why is government needed, according to Madison? What did he say was the “great difficulty” in “framing a government”? Finally, how is this great difficulty related to the conditions that must exist for a revolution against an established government to be justified? Use The Declaration of Independence to explain when a government might be changed or destroyed by the people.

5.American Indian policy changed after the Revolutionary War and ratification of the Constitution. While Americans had attempted to carry out a policy of “conquest,” natives refused “to regard themselves as a conquered people” (p. 171). Discuss three (3) distinct and specific actions the United States government took regarding Native Americans between 1790 and 1815. Explain how each of these actions both promoted assimilation of Native Americans into white society and sped up the transfer of Native American land to white control. Then, describe one (1) instance from this time period in which Native Americans took an approach of accommodating US interests and one (1) instance from this time period in which Native Americans took an approach of resistance to US interests.
