1. Beth Cuthand’s poem, “Were You There,” she portrays a speaker who seems to be questioning his/her disconnect from the natural world. Using viewpoint, discuss the speaker’s conflict as a resistance of healing. You are required to consider as evidence the stanza below:
 Were you there in the pine forest
 in communion with those old trees
 who keen for the people
 laden with their burden
 of grief and disrespect

Kim Soo Goodtrack’s short story, “Joe Flyingby’s Tape Recorded History,” portrays a narrator’s discomfort or position as a negotiation or struggle to reconcile her outsider status with an “authentic” way of knowing. She told us that as a child Joe was his Grandfather’s eyes. Joe’s grandfather was blind and also a Medicine Man. Joe was taught the old ways from a very young age. The whole Lakota community respected Joe. He was the first Medicine Man to hold a Sundance after the law banning Sundances was lifted in the early ‘70s.
3. Warren Cariou’s short story, “An Athabasca Story” seems to be an allegory, or a story that can be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning. Discuss the main character’s symbolic in-between status as a resistance (Ability not being affected by something) to authority(a person or organization having power or control) . Of course Elder Brother can’t die, luckily for him. Or perhaps not so luckily. He’s still alive even now, after everything he’s been through. It’s true that people don’t see him much anymore, but sometimes when you are driving your car and you press hard on the accelerator, you might hear a knocking, rattling sound down deep in the bowels of the machine. . That’s Elder Brother, trying to get your attention, begging you to let him out.
