Disability and Literature Discussion

Disability and Literature Discussion. The social model dominant in disability studies has focused on a perceived difference between impairment and disability. What happens when there is no impairment or the definition of impairment changes? Literature is always in some way reflective of its time and place. American society is culturally organized along cisgender lines in which the person’s gender self-identification is the same as that identified at birth. Cisgender identification is in the default position. Transgender self-identification is in the marked position because the gender self-identification differs from that identified at birth.

As can be seen in the folder contents, there is an on-going discussion of what constitutes a disability and resulting legal support. Pay close attention to the difference between transgender self-identification and gender dysphoria. Currently the impairment leading to disability would be gender dysphoria, not transgender self-identification. There has also been a marginalization of the LGBTQ population that intersects with disability due to social biases, and protection of the LGBTQ population remains a legal issue despite the legalization of same-sex marriage in some states.
