Description of DSM-5 Clinical Disorder

The purpose of this assignment is to provide an opportunity to integrate knowledge obtained from material taken from textbooks  (Davies & Troy, 2020; Bonfini & Ventura, 2021) within the ecological context of current times (e.g., COVID-19 pandemic). The assignment involves examining a DSM-5 clinical disorder that presents risk factors that have the potential to impair the psychosocial development of children and adolescents and discussing the implications for treatment.

Please consider the following guidelines as you complete this assignment:

Description of DSM-5 Clinical Disorder

  1. Provide a brief introduction that tells why you decided to study this DSM-5 clinical disorder.
  2. Describe the core diagnostic features of the DSM-5 clinical disorder.
  3. Analyze the prevalence of the disorder in the society at-large. What is the typical age of onset? What differences exist for gender and ethnicity? Is there a differential diagnosis related to this disorder? If so, what is it and why?
  4. For each stage of child development (i.e., infancy, toddlerhood, preschool, and school-age), discuss the following:

Describe the signs and symptoms of the DSM-5 disorder that are commonly seen in a child in the specified age range

If the age of onset of the disorder is at a later stage of development (i.e., preschool), describe signs or symptoms that might be precursors for the disorder at a later developmental stage. For example, PTSD is not diagnosed until the age of 6. What might be signs and symptoms seen in an infant or toddler (who has been traumatized) that might be precursors?

Describe the potential impact of this disorder for later developmental stages

This involves identifying the risk factors that having the DSM-5 disorder creates for the future. This question refers to the risk factors created by the DSM-5 disorder, not the risk factors for having the disorder.

  1. Select one of the practice models taught in the SW 630 course (i.e., Crisis Intervention, Task Centered Model, Motivational Interviewing, or Solution-Focused Therapy) that you believe would be helpful in treating a child that has the DSM-5 disorder. Present contemporary research (at least 2-3 studies) and discuss why the research shows that the model is evidence based for treating children with this DSM5 disorder. Studies might include descriptive, longitudinal, randomized control trial, quasi-experimental, meta-analysis, or systematic review).
  2. Present a clinical example of a child with or adolescent the DSM-5 disorder. You may choose one of the following options for the case example:

o A client from your field placement that you believe could be diagnosed with the disorder. Please let your field instructor know that you are planning to use the case for the paper. Attach to the paper a signed statement from your field instructor indicating you discussed the case in supervision and verifying that you have protected the confidentiality of the client by changing names and identifying information.

o A child or an adolescent from a famous family that has been in the news within the past 5 years. Conduct research on the child and their family through a Google search, You Tube videos, and/or from other news media (newspapers, magazines, TV). You are to imagine that the famous family is seeking services at your agency for their children. It is acceptable to hypothesize information about the presenting problem. However, you must clearly indicate and differentiate when you are hypothesizing, and when you are presenting actual data about the child/adolescent and their family that you found through your research.

  1. Briefly describe the child/adolescent. Use the Davies Risk and Protective Factor model presented in Chapter 3 and 4 of the Davies and Troy (2020) text to complete an assessment of the child and their family. Identify and describe the child/youth’s individual, family, and sociological risk factors. When discussing the sociological risk factors, include the impact (or possible impact) of the COVID-19 pandemic on the child/adolescent and their family. Discuss why you believe the child in your case example could be diagnosed with the DSM-5 disorder. Describe the child’s protective factors that may mitigate the impact of having the disorder.
  2. Describe how you would implement two intervention strategies (from your selected evidence-based practice model) with the child or adolescent.
  3. Identify the high risk and/or ethical issues that might be encountered in the treatment. How will you tailor the interventions to consider and address the cultural factors of the child/adolescent and their family?

10.Identify a resource in Imperial County, or a publication (e.g., book, workbook, game, DVD, or Internet website) that would be helpful to children who have the DSM-5 clinical disorder and/or their parents. Describe the resource and give your rationale as to why you think it would be helpful. Give identifying information for the resource. For example, for a community resource, give name, address, telephone number, contact person, cost of service, composition of staff, and note type of agency (private or public, profit or nonprofit, etc.) For a publication, give title, author, publisher, cost, where book or DVD can be obtained. For a website, give the Internet address.

11.Conclude your paper by briefly stating how you plan to incorporate what you learned from this assignment into your practice of social work with children and families
