business role protecting environment and define sustainable development
(1) Should all industries be required to meet the same levels of pollution control? Why or why not? (2) How would you respond to critics who say that cap and trade programs allow polluters to buy their way out of the responsibility of cleaning up their operations?
(1) In what ways could your employer (or your college, if you’re not currently working) take steps to reduce resource depletion? (2) How did you dispose of the last electronic product you stopped using?
As major users of natural resources and generators of waste products, businesses play a huge role in conservation and pollution-reduction efforts. Many businesses are making an effort to reduce, reuse, and recycle, and governments are trying market-based approaches such as cap and trade to encourage businesses to reduce emissions. All these efforts are part of a trend toward sustainable development, which can be defined as meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
